The Technologies: This site was developed using some of the key technologies we offer to our customers, including Microsoft's ASP.Net, Visual Basic.Net, Visual Studio .Net 2003, SQL Server 2000, and Windows Server 2003. ASP.Net supports some of the most advanced features for the development of secure, high performance, database driven Web sites or Intranet applications. ASP.Net has proven to be a very solid and stable platform for the creation of Web sites and Intranet sites to conduct mission critical business operations in government, industry, and commercial organizations.
The Architecture: The core architecture of this site was not developed from scratch however, we utilized a low cost portal software package called DotNetNuke (or DNN) to create the site. This software provides a modular approach to the development of Web sites, once the software is installed and configured, there is no need for the site's owner, administrator, or users to know about creation of Web pages, programming, or database systems to be able to add, modify, and manage the content of the site. All the administrative and end-user interactions with the portal can be controlled by a robust, role based, security architecture built into the DNN product. DNN provides 20 standard modules for the creation of the content in the DNN driven site, many other modules are available for free or at a low cost from third party vendors. The Almácigo Systems site was created utilizing only the standard modules provided by DNN. The creation and management of the site is done by a user with Administrator privileges via the Web browser.
Mobile Device Support: Since the DNN portal software was built using ASP.Net and SQL Server, it was fairly easy for the developers to provide access to the site for mobile devices like Internet connected phones and PDAs. ASP.Net provides an extremely sophisticated architecture for the development of Web sites for mobile devices. In the past, it was not easy to develop Web sites for mobile devices since you needed to take into consideration the wide array of devices and standards proliferating in the connected mobile devices market. ASP.Net solves this problem by allowing you to forget about the customization of the software for different devices and let you develop the software using standard .Net controls for all the devices, ASP.Net will automatically recognize the capabilities of the device (including browser type and display capabilities like size, colors, and orientation) and render the content of the pages in a format that is compatible with the device. At the moment ASP.Net has been tested and approved for compatibility on over 200 mobile devices, more devices are being tested and added all the time. To the right you can see how our Web portal looks like when accessed from a mobile device. |
